MODERNIZING GEORGIA’S TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR
TOPOGRAPHY AND VERTICAL DATA

Please see the DRAFT, Modernizing Georgia’s Technical Requirements for Topography and Vertical Data, presented at the SAMSOG Board and General Membership meeting Saturday, 9/27/2019.  This document is based on feedback and recommendations provided by surveyors and government officials who are familiar with this type of work and the current business and regulatory environment.  Other states rules were compared as well as other sources. The goal is not to over-regulate or under-regulate but rather to come up with a reasonable set of guidelines which can be reasonably understood by those outside of the surveying profession that may be affected.  A wide range of recommendations from some knowledgeable surveyors and photogrammetrists have already been submitted which ranged from “one check point per acre mapped” to “whatever the surveyor deems necessary”.  The goal is not to tell anyone how to do their job but to make sure that everyone is playing by the same rules, and that those who are not supposed to be playing the game realize it.  The goal of the State Licensing Board is not to shut down all topo work by drones, as some would prefer, but to create safeguards to protect the public from work that looks good but later creates serious problems.  ALL input is appreciated.

Please review at your convenience and provide any feedback you think necessary or helpful, by EMAIL TO YOUR CHAPTER REPRESENTATIVE NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 30th.  If you are not currently affiliated with a chapter, click here for the list.  This proposed rule will be discussed, revised, and/or amended through mid-January with the hope a final version can be voted on for preliminary approval at the March 2020 State Licensing Board meeting. A public hearing will then be held and if all goes according to plan, the rule will be adopted at the May 2020 meeting.
