Norfolk Southern contact?
Does anyone out there have a good contact for Norfolk Southern right of way maps? I've tried the website, but I'm getting nowhere with that. Thanks.

Is the section of right of way you are concerned with formerly part of the Central of Georgia Railroad?  When the Central of Georgia Railroad was taken over by Norfolk-Southern in 1982, all of the Central of Georgia’s records, consisting of tens of thousands of volumes and files and several thousand maps and right of way plans, were given to the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah.  The maps and right of way plans date back to 1833.  The Central of Georgia provided funding to fully catalog the collection.  The catalog itself is impressive.  It is very detailed and it is easy to look up specific things using it.  I have used the collection quite a bit.

A description of the main collection is at;query=;brand=default

Descriptions of addenda and subsidiary collections are at

Whenever another railroad became part of the Central of Georgia as a result of merger or acquisition, the Central of Georgia usually acquired that railroad's records, so that the records of many smaller railroads are part of the collection.  A general list of the railroads that merged with or that were acquired by the Central of Georgia through the years is at

Where in general is the section of right of way you are dealing with?  I have title abstracts for many of the railroad rights of way in coastal Georgia.

A full list of contacts and real estate related services can be found at Not long ago you could request a right of way map for an area by providing county, land lot, district and distance to nearest mile maker via email and receive a scan of the map within a day or two, at no charge. Now you have to submit a request,, along with a non refundable $100 fee and hope to get a response.
