The Southern Polytechnic State University team placed 1st in SanDiego, CA. We returned Tuesday evening around 9:00pm. The students also attended the FIG meeting Monday and Tuesday which was held in conjunction with the CALS/NALS and NSPS conference. FIG is attempting to begin a North American Chapter and invited the "young surveyors" to be active in this organizational effort.
SPSU Team members included: Carlos Reyes-Garcia, Rich Vannozzi; NSPS Student Competition Chairman , Antonio Sample, Stefka Vacheva, Ray Knight, Evan Whatley, and Erik Bullman. Faculty Advisor and Team Coach Dan Branham, RLS 2483.
This years competition was to actually prepare an ALTA/ACSM survey, complete a binder with all documentation and submit one month prior to competition for review, then travel to SanDiego to present the survey to the judges as the surveyor would present the survey to his client.
Other teams present were Oregon Institute of Technology, California State University-Fresno, Michigan Technical University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, New Mexico State University, Utah Valley University, Penn State-Wilkes-Barre.
We thank all SAMSOG members, (especially those that were able to contribute by donating funds in support of he Competition Team). Without their generous donations, the students would not have been able to attend.
This 1st Place win in the Annual NSPS Student Competition reflects highly on the education of Surveying and Mapping Students within the State of GA as well as the support provided to the Team by SAMSOG and its membership.
